Tulum sits on the Mexican part of the Caribbean Sea (map), on the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula (map), at the south end of the Riviera Maya (map), on the rim of the All-Inclusive-Grand-Hotel zone. It is an hour and a half from Cancun International Airport and only 40 minutes from Playa del Carmen along highway 307, a modern 4-lane road between Cancun and South of Playa del Carmen (map) and a fairly wide two-lane strip South of Playa (map).

The Tulum area is actually conformed of three Tulums minutes away from each other (map):

Tulum Pueblo (town) is split by highway 307 running South-North. "El Pueblo", as referred to by locals, is home to most workers of the tourist industry and where many of the stores, supermarkets, bus stations, inns, hostels and small hotels are found.

Tulum Playa (beach) nests along the coastline highway that leads into the Sian Ka'an Ecological Reserve, the Caribbean white sandy beaches to the east, an impressive mangrove & wetland reserve to the west. Tulum Playa embraces many of the fancier, ecological, boutique and spa hotels, and it has a descent selection of good restaurants and night spots.

Tulum Ruinas (ruins) is the archeological site where the Maya ruins of Tulum stand. It is conformed by a-mile-long road leading into the ruins from highway 307. The road is flanked by several restaurants, a commercial area geared to one-day visitors, a huge parking lot, a small bus station that operates part-time and a handful of middle range hotels.

Tulum's privileged geographical location provides an endeared atmosphere to plan a mid or long-term stay, and with so many options and such a wide range of things to do at a short distance away, combining a SPANISH learning vacation with adventure activities, health/spa programs, exploration trips and cultural events is very possible. At the "The Pink Iguana" we often teach many of the lessons in town, in especially dedicated classrooms (2) or on a 2nd-floor balcony, in Tulum Pueblo. You can also choose to take your SPANISH lessons at your favorite spot by the beach, the ruins, your hotel pool, or your pick of a cafe or restaurant. In general, alternating places for lessons is the most effective way to take advantage of the program and the amenities in the area.
